In
the summer of 1991, Charles and Barbara Thomas had a desire
to establish an organization to assist women who face life
altering crises in their lives. They also recognized the
need for such a community-based organization in the area in
which they raised in..
The North Baton Rouge
Women's Help Center (NBRWHC)
was duly incorporated in January 1992. The Center was
temporarily housed
in the home of Charles and Barbara Thomas. In May 1993, service to the community actually began through a
crisis hotline through which NBRWHC
was able to provide counseling, referrals, maternity clothes
and baby clothes to many clients. Presentations and seminars
were provided to young women on an on-going basis.
In June
1993, the first edition of Restoration News, a
monthly newsletter, was published. The name has since been
changed to The Women's Help Center News and is
published quarterly. During this same month, two vacant lots
were purchased on Scenic
Highway. A housing structure was located, secured, and moved
onto the property by September 1993. Renovations began to
the 2,200 square feet of office space and furnishings,
supplies, educational equipment, personnel, and all other
needed resources were obtained to begin services. Volunteer
contractors, laborers, painters, neighbors and friends
donated their time and expertise to the completion of the
renovations on February 17, 1995. On February 22,
1995, NBRWHC opened the doors to our current facility.
NBRWHC
continues to operate on individual contributions, fund
raisers, small grants, and businesses and churches who adopt
us as part of their local missions outreach.
