In the summer of 1991, Charles and Barbara Thomas had a desire to establish an organization to assist women who face life altering crises involving unplanned pregnancy. They also recognized the need for such a community-based organization in the area in which they raised.

The North Baton Rouge Women's Help Center (NBRWHC) was duly incorporated in January 1992. The Center was temporarily housed in the home of Charles and Barbara Thomas. In May 1993, service to the community began through a 24-Hour Crisis Hotline through which NBRWHC was able to provide counseling, referrals, maternity clothes and baby clothes to their clients. Presentations and seminars were provided to young women on an on-going basis.

In June 1993, the first edition of Restoration News, a monthly newsletter, was published. The name was to The Women's Help Center News in 1998 and is published quarterly. Today, NBRWHC publishes The Family Resource Quarterly and The Hard Truth. During this same month, two vacant lots were purchased in the north Baton Rouge area, a facility was moved onto the property by September 1993. Renovations began to the 2,200 square feet of office space and furnishings, supplies, educational equipment, personnel, and all the necessary resources were obtained to begin services. Volunteer contractors, laborers, painters, neighbors and friends donated their time and expertise to the completion of the project. On February 22, 1995, NBRWHC opened our doors to begin serving the community.

In April 1998, the North Baton Rouge Women’s Help Center expanded its’ services and incorporated Family Values Resource Institute, Inc.

In 2005, the North Baton Rouge Women’s Help Center officially merged with Family Values Resource Institute becoming one of their four major programs, which also includes a Technology and Career Development Center, a Youth Character Education and Development Center, and a Personal Empowerment Center.

In August 2006, a 22,000 facility was donated to the organization and a Capital Campaign drive is currently underway.

NBRWHC continues to operate on community contributions, church support, fundraisers, Corporate donations, and small local grants.
